Peatland Restoration – Achnacarry Estate
Earlier this year we completed our first major peatland restoration site in the hills of Achnacarry estate. This peatland site was located on an upland area of blanket bog which had been heavily eroded over time resulting in the formation of large peat hags and gullies. Throughout the restoration process we used four of our low ground pressure excavators as well as a five ton tracked dumper and an argo ATV for access. The restoration site consisted of 45,775m of hag re-profiling, the installation of 2,885 peat dams, 5.38ha of bund areas and finally the seeding of pools with neighbouring sphagnum. Through constant dialogue with the estate, the peatland action project officer and the survey team we were able to deliver this project on time and with great results through a difficult winter.
